Residents of Alexandra will join the Uniting Reformed Church for the third annual Reverend Dr Sam Buti Fun Walk on September 15 2018.

The walk is organised under the auspices of the church council, the Sunday school, the City of Joburg and the Fat Cats Athletic Club.

It is in honour of Reverend Dr Sam Buti, an icon of Alexandra and founder of the historical Save Alexandra campaign and the head pastor at the time.

The Uniting Reformed Church has also partnered with Region E in City of Johannesburg in hosting the walk.

“We are so proud to be associated with this community-focused walk. The City will be providing health screening services through its departments such as blood pressure and diabetes testing, at the finishing line for all participants,” said Regional Director Liziwe Ntshinga-Makoro.

Uniting Reformed Church’s Reverend Nicholas Mashiane said the walk was becoming an important event in the social sporting calendar in the township.

“We are all ready, revved up and raring to hit the streets in memory of a legend. The benefits of healthy living can’t be over-emphasised and we urge the community to join us as well as our friends from outside the township for a day of fun as we enjoy this historic place we call home” he said.

Tickets are available for R50 (adults) and R20 for children under the age of 12 and can be purchased at the church or at Alex Mall. The Walk will start at 7am at the church located on the corner of Reverend Sam Buti Street and 5th Avenue and will finish at Altrek Sport Ground where walkers can enjoy some fun with their families with some entertainment activities planned.

Some of the entertainment activities planned for the day at the stadium include face painting, jumping castles for children, games and many more.

As part of the family fun, food will be on sale. Cooler bags are allowed but strictly cans will be allowed in.

The proceeds from the walk will go towards improving facilities at the church complex including furniture and learning material for the Sunday school.
