“Overall, it was an unqualified success. We had the lowest number of reported incidents since we began in 2014. The feedback on social media has been overwhelming positive. Very few complaints,” said Freedom Ride board member Hugh Fraser.

The 36km ride was hosted by the City of Johannesburg, Linkd Environmental Services and Paragon Architects to celebrate the centenary and life of Nelson Mandela, promote safe cycling in Johannesburg for commuters and recreational riders, and offer residents to explore the city and its new cycle lanes.

The ride was completed by the front riders within two hours, which was pretty quick and the last riders came in around 10:45am.

The route took riders through Braamfontein, Brixton, and Newclare and into Soweto. The riders spent a short time at the vibrant area around Mandela’s house in Vilikazi Street before going through to Diepkloof, past Soccer City and into Mayfair and returning to the Nelson Mandela Bridge.
