Yesterday marked another milestone achieved by the City of Johannesburg and labour unions.

The City of Johannesburg has signed the terms of reference of the Local Labour Forum (LLF), Local Management Forum (LMF) and Local Management Committee (LMC) for the City and the Municipal Entities.

Representatives from the City and the two leading unions, the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) all signed the documents on Tuesday, April 3 2018.

The agreement follows the successful convening of the labour lekgotla between the City of Johannesburg, Samwu and Imatu in December 2017.

All the parties finally put their differences aside after several years of strife within the labour unions, which had in the past resulted in constrained engagements on issues of mutual interest.

According to the acting Member of the Mayoral Committee for Corporate and Shared Service, Cllr Michael Sun, the signing of the terms of reference between the City and unions will result in harmonious relations within labour and that is very crucial for Johannesburg’s service delivery agenda.

It is critical for structures meant to provide platforms for dialogue between labour and the employer to function effectively for labour stability to be maintained.

“I am delighted to announce that today, April 3 2018, the City has signed the terms of reference for the LLF, LMF and LMC, giving effect to the discussions that were concluded at the Labour Lekgotla,” said Cllr Sun.
