The City of Johannesburg’s Library and Information Services Unit, in partnership with Nelson Mandela University, launched a pilot puzzle-based coding program called tanks at Randburg Library on 4 December 2018.

Tanks is a mobile app coding game that is aimed at teaching pupils basic computer programming principles.

The coding game is designed for pupils between the ages of 10 and 14.

The game was piloted by 20 enthusiastic pupils from grades 6 to 7 from the neighbouring IR Griffith Primary School.  The learners thoroughly enjoyed the experience and showed their competitive nature by competing to get to the highest level of the game.

The City of Johannesburg is committed to playing a critical role in creating the next generation of software developers. It is encouraging pupils, through its partnership, to use library computers and Wi-Fi to learn coding.

Recently the Department of Basic Education announced that coding will be among the three new subjects to be introduced in schools in the next two years.

“City libraries will be well positioned to play an important role in bridging the knowledge gap that some teachers might experience when coding is introduced as a subject,” said Jeff Nyoka, e-learning Manager at the City of Johannesburg.

As part of its partnership with the City, the Nelson Mandela University will sponsor 15 games to be used in the City’s township libraries.
