The Construction of rental units in Dobsonville Extension 3 is progressing well and is expected to be completed by November 2018.

This is according to Anthony Ngcezula, Chief Executive Officer of the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO).

The development will yield a total of 502 units made up of 350 two-bedroom units and 152 one-bedroom structures to accommodate mixed-income households.

Each unit will consist of one/two bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room and a bathroom. There will also be bachelor units which consist of one bedroom, open plan kitchen, dining room and a bathroom. The four-storey block of flats also includes a new Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre, says Ngcezula.

A new sewer line has been installed in the massive structure and the water, electricity and roads infrastructure upgraded.

The Dobsonville Social Housing Project is one of JOSHCO’s high-density projects aimed at providing affordable rental accommodation. Part of the Dobsonville project was funded by the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA).

Ngcezula says over 700 jobs were created during construction. “This is part of our ongoing efforts to alleviate unemployment. We ensured that labour for construction is drawn from surrounding communities. Residents of the area are involved in the development of their community and they also benefit financially and acquire additional skills.”

He expresses hope that employees who were hired during construction would start their own income-generating businesses at the end of the project. “Such projects enable the city to tackle the triple challenge of unemployment, poverty and inequality identified in our 2040 Growth and Development Strategy. The Dobsonville project adds to JOSHCO’s growing portfolio of housing initiatives including the upcoming Lufhereng project.”
