Last week, afternoon, 5 suspects were arrested for the attempted murder of a Pikitup General Manager. The suspects were part of protesters picketing outside Pikitup offices since Monday, demanding that they be employed by the City’s waste management company.
It is alleged that, on last Monday, the suspects assaulted the manager, dousing him with petrol and threatening to set him alight; the manager was able to escape.
Following the incident, the matter was reported to City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) Department. Members of the Hawks, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) were subsequently notified.
The suspects were apprehended after being positively identified by the victim while they were picketing outside Pikitup’s offices. The suspects were arrested on the scene.
The City thanked law enforcement authorities for their assistance in apprehending the suspects and promised to engage them further in order to provide any support needed to secure a conviction.
Finally, the City reported that it’s spend on the capital budget reached 91% and 98.5% of its spending on infrastructure grants by the end of the 2017/18 financial year.
Mayor Mashaba added, “I would like to express my most sincere appreciation to the law abiding residents of our City and assure them that our efforts directly benefit residents.’’
