In a recent sitting of the Mayoral Committee last week, the City was notified of the outcomes of the feasibility study relating to the insourcing of catering services for the City of Johannesburg and its entities.
During the 2017 State of the City address, I announced that certain services would be insourced by the City of Johannesburg.
Already, the City has begun the process of insourcing security services within the City. This was a process I was proud to be a part of which brought much needed dignity to security workers within the City.
To this end, our Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS) was tasked with facilitating the implementation of insourcing projects, including the insourcing of catering services within the City.
To this end, GCSS has proposed to the insourcing of catering services be provided by the Joburg Theatre through its company, Stages, which is currently provides food services to the entity.
In order to ensure that high health standards is upheld, the City’s Environmental Health Department would be part of the handover team overseeing this integration.
This proposal of utilising Joburg Theatre will add value to the City. Revenue generated will be used for the benefit of the City.
The City’s Executive Adjudication Committee has approved the partnership with Joburg Theatre for the operation of Canteen, Coffee Shop and Trolley services for City employees and members of the public from the Metro Centre premises for an initial period of 3 years.
The Metro Centre canteen facilities will be used to service COJ employees and evolve into a solution that can be broadened to cater for various other engagements such as Mayoral Committees, Section 79, and Council Sittings and the like.
With the awarding of Joburg Theatre (Stages) with this opportunity, an additional 20 staff are to be introduced and recruited as the services and scope is broadened over the long term.
The above solution will allow the City to remain efficient whereby staff will be accommodated as opposed to having to leave the employment premises to obtain the required services. This enhances productivity time and reduces opportunity cost of time which will be beneficial to both the staff and the City.
