Mourners who will be attending the funeral of the Mother of the Nation, Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, are urged to use the park and ride facility at the Nasrec Expo Centre for Saturday’s funeral.
Joburg Metro Police Department’s Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar warns motorists to avoid roads around Orlando Stadium and advises those who live around the stadium to get special permits to allow them access to their homes.
Mooki Street will be blocked off between Soweto Highway and Sofasonke Street, and Klipspruitvalley Road will be closed between N17 Circle and Khumalo Street.
“At about 12pm, the funeral procession will leave Orlando Stadium and join the N1 north freeway. It will go left at William Nicol, left at Witkoppen Road, Right at Cedar Road and onto a private road into Fourways Memorial. Officers will be deployed around the route to direct traffic. The procession is expected to proceed from 12pm to 1.30pm,” says Chief Superintendent Minnaar.
Mourners will not be allowed to drive through cordoned-off areas and will have to park at Nasrec. They will then be ferried by buses to the stadium. The roads will be reopened at 6pm. The Rea Vaya bus route will not be affected. Transport will be deployed from 4.30am to 9am.
The funeral service will start at 6am at Madikizela-Mandela’s Orlando West home before the official service at 9am at the stadium. The funeral service is expected to be attended by dignitaries from across the world.
