The heritage of Joburg will be evoked through various events lined up this long weekend as the City joins the rest of South Africa to celebrate National Heritage Day.
City entities and departments have pulled out all stops o make this heritage day a memorable one. These include:
• The Joburg Theatre will recreate the memory and ideas of Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko with the play “Bantu”, which runs from 20 September to 5 October.
• The James Hall Museum will take you on a ride down memory lane through its Vintage Cars and Bikes show taking place on Sunday from 9am to 5pm.
• Also on Sunday, Joburg Tourism, in partnership with Soweto Braai Festival will host the Great Braai Day at the Emndeni Sports Facility starting at 10am. There’ll be live performances, a food market and more, gates open at 10am.
• On Sunday, the Finetown Multipurpose Hall will erupt into voices of praise as various gospel choirs bring down the house with their clap and tap songs. This Indigenous Gospel Festival will run from midday to 7pm.
• On Monday Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba will unveil a blue heritage plaque to honour music legend Letta Mbulu at her family home in Orlando East, followed by a tribute concert at the Orlando Communal Hall, with performances by friends from the music industry, together with rising young talents.
• Soweto Theatre will host the Soweto Heritage Festival in Jabulani from 10am.
