The City of Johannesburg's social housing entity, Joshco, is gearing up to allocate over 500 affordable rental units at the Turffontein Social Housing Project in the coming months.

Turffontein is a cosmopolitan area in the south of Johannesburg surrounded by single dwelling residential stands/properties. The total property size is 49 950 m2 with 525 green field units including disability dwellings.

The R191-million development is divided into several blocks. Each block has an inner courtyard with a play area for children. There is also ample space for parking in the precinct and a biometric access control system.

The housing stock consists of one-bedroom and two-bedroom communal rental units, which will be available for rental for people earning between R1 500 and R15 000 a month and in possession of a valid South African identity document.

Joshco's Acting CEO, Christopher Dyani, recently announced plans for the entity to accelerate its delivery of affordable rental accommodation to the residents of Joburg.

“Joshco plans to deliver safer, cleaner and technological advanced neighbourhoods with access to recreational facilities and amenities," said Dyani.

Joshco was established in March 2004 to help eradicate the housing backlog among the city's low-income earners. The social entity has a housing stock of more than 6 800 units in its portfolio.
