In an effort to ensure that City is part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Joburg has partnered with Google SA to spread digital skills training.
The digital skills programme will initially be offered at 12 libraries across the city’s seven regions and Google will issue endorsed certificates that can be added to the students’ qualifications or courses completed.
The courses’ content can be accessed by registering for free at the centres via an e-learning portal: “COJ-ELEARNING” – or online via http://www.cojelearning.org.za.
City’s libraries introduced e-classrooms upskill the youth and community members with digital skills that are relevant to today’s trends. The target for the Google SA and City Digital Skills training programme is to reach 150 000.
The City’s e-classrooms are intended to contribute towards encouraging the employability of youth, creating employment opportunities for youth and bridging the digital divide among the residents regardless of the social background,
“The City believes that this initiative will be a game changer in how communities embrace the changing role of libraries across modern societies the world over,” says Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Cllr Nohlanhla Sifumba.
The collaboration entails, among others, courses like building websites. The courses will empower learners to use the acquired skills to seek employment and or even create their own businesses.
“Digitan, a company endorsed by Google SA, is training 12 facilitators who will be drawing a monthly stipend while learning,” said Dan Memela from Digitan.
