Whistles and screams by kwaito enthusiasts hit the roof when friends of Moruti wa Tsotsi delivered an exhilarating show in honour of the late Senyaka during ‘A night of Kwaito’ at the Joburg Theatre Fringe.
The one night performance presented by actor Lerato Mvelase took revelers on a journey of the life and times of the legendary multi-faceted entertainer whose real name was Thula Kekana.
Fans came dressed in ‘spotties’ and All Star sneakers, displaying the kwaito ambiance. The show kicked off on a spiritual note with Senyaka’s friend and Trompies member Jairus
“Jakarumba” Nkwe who opened with a short prayer prior to a lively performance displaying his signature dance moves.
Among other friends who performed included hitmaker Mandla “Spikiri” Mofokeng, who did not disappoint in his execution of hits such as Ndofaya and Current and Danny “Kamazu” Malewa, Mzekezeke, J Ross, DJ Beat Mochini, Tloks Lepara and Beat Mochini.
The two-hour nostalgia driven show serenaded revelers and kept them on their feet as they belted out some of Senyaka’s greatest hits (Shesa Mpama, Fong Kong and others). Every segment of the show was compelling with no dull moment as clips from Senyaka’s funny movies kept everyone in stitched in between each segment.
The Themba Sithole-produced show displayed Senyaka’s growth to a multitalented artist who excelled as a rapper when the rap genre was still taboo in South Africa and went on to become one of the most loved kwaito artist and comedian who incorporated his life experiences into his art.
Mvelase urged everyone to revisit the genre of kwaito and remember what it stood for. “Kwaito is our very own genre, we own it. We are able to express ourselves through this genre. Senyaka is a clear example of what the kwaito culture is all about.”
