Meeting with the community, Mayor Mashaba expressed his condolences to the families and loved ones who are grieving the loss of their children.

“This is an injustice, exacerbated by the loss of the lives of two young people who had their lives ahead of them. All of this has come to an abrupt end because of poor service delivery that the City had no control over,” he said.

Mayor Mashaba agreed that the provision of electricity in the area was an urgent matter and would therefore prioritise the community in making a case on their behalf to Eskom.

According to the City’s department of environment and infrastructure services, the provision of electricity is not in the City’s jurisdiction but that of Eskom.

He explained that the budget allocation for electrification was processed through Eskom, enabling the City to implement thereafter.

He agreed that indeed electricity is an important aspect of ensuring residents live with dignity, empowering them to use this provision as they deem fit.
