The City of Joburg has challenged its residents to continue to work at cleaning up their neighbourhoods, even after next month’s Global Citizen Festival happening at the FNB Stadium.
While the A Re Sebetseng clean-up initiative has been running for a while now, there was added impetus after the city partnered with Global Citizen to encourage citizens to help tidy up their communities by picking up litter, and even planting trees.
Through the various activities, residents could earn themselves a pair of sought-after festival tickets each.
Global Citizen CEO, Hugh Evans, who also participated in the clean-up said: “We’re thrilled to partner with the Mayor and the City of Joburg to make sure that the clean-up effort takes place across the whole city, because at the heart of Global Citizen is this idea that you can’t buy a ticket, you have to earn your way in. So citizens have taken action – we’ve collected over 8 000 bags [of litter] over the last several weeks. We believe that at the heart of community services is this idea that we all have to contribute to make the world a better place.”
Mayor Mashaba said he wanted to see this level of participation and commitment from residents, even when there are no incentives.
He added: “The next few hours is not about winning tickets, it’s not about cleaning the city, it’s actually about what we can do for our city, and our neighbourhood. Let’s really go out there and demonstrate to the world, because this is a global initiative… for the 7 billion people of the world to take care of their environment.”
The festival takes place on December 2, 2018 at the FNB Stadium.
