The City of Johannesburg is calling upon residents to take charge in shaping the 2018/19 Budget, Tariffs and IDP Review; through their participation in the upcoming consultation meetings in their areas.
The City recently tabled its draft Budget and the Integrated Development Plan in Council (IDP). This means, the City through the Legislature would be seeking the inputs and comments from residents, business communities, non-governmental organisations and various stakeholders.
The Speaker of the Council, Councillor Vasco da Gama says it is very important for the residents to attend the IDP consultation meetings in their regions in big numbers. This is in order to ensure that their voices are heard, that they ensure the final budget reflects their needs and that they hold the executive to account.
“The IDP process is one of the most powerful tools which residents could use to influence the direction they want their municipality to take, and to influence which services they think must be prioritized and budgeted for by the City. It also enables them to hold the executive accountable,” says Speaker Da Gama.
The IDP is known as the social contract between the people and the City. It is an approach to planning that involves the entire municipality and its citizens in finding the best solutions to achieve good long-term development.
“The IDP platform allows the residents to engage the City on what they want to see in the plans and the budget of the City. Ultimately, the City’s budget and plans must truly reflect the wishes of the residents,” says Speaker Da Gama
Speaker Da Gama says, it vital that residents also make inputs on the draft tariffs which would affect the rates for services such as electricity, water and property rates after the final budget, tariffs and IDP have been approved.
