All roads lead 'Back to the City' for Africa's biggest hip-hop festival this Saturday, 27 April 2019, at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown.

In its 13th edition, Back to the City international festival is expected to heat up Joburg with a line-up of 90 acts, made up of the biggest names in local music such as Cassper Nyovest, Stogie T and Boom Shaka, who will perform as part of the Heritage feature as well as US hip-hop legends EPMD as the international act.

The event will also exhibit street art, break-dancing, art installation, skateboarding, film, street fashion, gaming and a hip-hop summit.

From the daytime events to the nightly performances, this is one time that the inner city comes alive with true freedom of expression providing a destination for hip hop fans, artists and industry related individuals to converge and celebrate the experience of hip hop and youth culture.

This year's theme is 'Freedom Charter' and festival organiser Osmic Menoe said the intention is to reflect on the Freedom Charter and review its significance in South Africa's current status quo, while also reflecting on the country's achievements.

"So the theme is looking at the strides our country has taken since 27 April 1994, and how far young people have come, while we are asking young people... What is the Freedom Charter, do you know what it is about. Our aim is to educate young people about the significance of Freedom day," said Menoe.
