Musa Matimba Mkhacane, the new Head of the Engineering Centre of Excellence, wants to professionalise and streamline the roll out of City infrastructure.
To achieve this, Mkhacane will rely on provisions and regulations from National Treasury.
The Limpopo-born father of four grew up in Mhinga Village and studied in Giyani, where he matriculated at Khanyisa College in 1993. He went on to obtain a National Diploma in Civil Engineering and a B-Tech Degree in Urban Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
He also has a Higher Certificate in Project Management from Damelin College and is currently enrolled with the Tshwane University of Technology for a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
Mkhacane started working in the City on Monday, 7 January 2019, and is mainly responsible for overseeing engineering projects. “It’s an opportunity for growth,” he says.
His work includes coordinating infrastructure delivery from a technical point and contract management. He has been assigned to make use of digital technology in his work.
“There is space to be innovative in the City and to map a way for industry peers to follow,” he says.
A former Chief Engineer in the Limpopo Public Works Department, Mkhacane has vast experience that spans over 20 years in the field.
In that time, he has handled large-scale capital projects, including planning, design, implementation and project and contract administration.
He says he was groomed by his father, a retired engineer himself. “My father is a Civil Engineer and used to take me to work in the former Gazankulu homeland, that’s what sparked the interest for me,” says Mkhacane.
He enthuses that bigger metropolitan cities like Joburg should take the lead in how infrastructure should be rolled out. “We need to ensure that in any infrastructure development, all engineering principles are adhered to in order to realise value for money,” he explains.
Mkhacane was born on 29 January. He is an IT enthusiast, enjoys jogging and gaming. He is a qualified and registered Professional Civil Engineering Technologist.
