The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has invested close to R23 million in the construction of the Diepsloot pedestrian bridge that will be opened next week Wednesday, 7 August 2019.

The bridge will play a significant role in the lives of residents particularly pupils crossing the wetland.

The bridge links Diepsloot’s Extensions 1 and 2, with a safe passage during times of heavy rains and flash flooding.

The bridge forms part of the City of Johannesburg’s commitment to improving public safety and mobility of communities. It also serves to provide easy access to services such as shopping facilities, community amnesties and health facilities.

A total number of 24 local labourers were employed and four SMME contractors were appointed on this project.

Construction started on 7 May 2018 and although the bridge is 98% complete, it will be opened on Wednesday. Completion date is scheduled for mid-August.

The following works are still outstanding: backfilling within ramp walls, slab to ramp, and additional works (electrification, concrete block paving, rehabilitation in terms of the environmental health requirements).
