The construction of the R130 million Social Cluster in Brixton is taking shape and the structure is on track to be completed by July 2019.

The project, which is being implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, consists of a new multi-purpose sports and recreation centre, the upgrading of the existing sports fields and green open space, a new play area for kids and parking space.

The next phase of the project will entail the creation of a public square, the construction of a new library and a coffee shop and upgrading of the swimming pool complex.

City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Development Planning, Councillor Reuben Masango, says the upgrade will significantly improve social connectivity and interface between residents of Mayfair, Westbury and Brixton.

“The project is now 42.9% complete and we are confident it will be done by July,” says MMC Masango, adding that the amenities will enable residents of surrounding areas to live and play together, thus enhancing social cohesion.

According to the JDA, the project has created employment opportunities for 50 workers from local communities, who continue to receive training and development through the project. To date, 10 SMMEs have been engaged to undertake various parts of the project.
