The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) By-Law Enforcement Unit has devised a new strategy to deal with the growing illegal dumping across the City of Johannesburg.
As part of the City’s Operation Buya Mthetho, the By-law Management Unit of JMPD has increased resources and intensified deployment in combating illegal dumping.
The “Silent Hunters” metro police officers in unmarked patrol vehicles have been deployed to illegal dumping hot spots to monitor and clamp down on illegal dumpers. So far the operation has proven to be extremely successful, one week into its operation, the undercover unit has already nabbed nine illegal dumpers in the act.
MMC of Public Safety Michael Sun says “Illegal dumping is becoming out of hand in the City, many of the scrupulous operators are collecting building rubble, industrial waste, plastic and other refuse to dump for a fee and the residents are suffering the pollution of illegal dumping. We had to come up with an effective way to catch the illegal dumpers so we can maximise the deterrence to this kind of illegal behaviour”, “When illegal dumpers are caught or traced, a fine is issued and if the vehicle used in the illegal dumping is unroadworthy or unsafe, the vehicle will be impounded by the JMPD”.
Residents are encouraged to use the Anti-illegal Dumping Hotline to report illegal dumpers. Residents are advised to take clear photos of the illegal dumping as well as the number plate of the vehicle then send these pictures together with the date, time and location of the illegal dumping to 082 779 1361. By-law Management Unit will trace the offender and deal with them accordingly.
