At the beginning of this month, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) welcomed 28 new sergeants into its ranks.
The 24 female and four (4) male Metro Police Officers were formally honoured with the rank of JMPD Sergeants at the Public Safety Head Quarters in Martindale on 1 February.
The Chief of Police, Mr. David Tembe personally dressed the chevrons shields on the new sergeants, who were also warmly congratulated by MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun. The sergeants will now be responsible, amongst others, to inspect parades, ensuring that all officers are properly uniformed, and equipped for the operation ahead. They will also conduct quality control checks on the performance of their officers.
The position is managerial in nature and comes with huge operational and management responsibilities. They began their functions immediately.
Addressing the sergeants, MMC Sun said, “Today is a very important day. You are not only promoted in rank but are also given more responsibilities in ensuring the residents of the City of Johannesburg are safe. You also have the responsibility to ensure the members in your command perform their functions optimally. You need to ensure that your members return to parade safely and you also need to take care of yourself. We as the City are extremely proud of your well-earned achievement and wish you strength in your new appointment”.
