The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is a unique two-phase United Nations (UN) summit that was initiated in order to create an evolving multi-stakeholder platform aimed at addressing the issues raised by information and communication technologies (ICTs) through a structured and inclusive approach at the national, regional and international levels.

The WSIS Prize 2019 is a mechanism to evaluate and reward stakeholders who have submitted projects for their efforts in the implementation of WSIS outcomes.

The contest is open to all WSIS stakeholders, is an integral part of the WSIS Stocktaking Process and comprises prizes in 18 categories that are directly linked to the WSIS Action Lines outlined in the Geneva Plan of Action.

In October 2018, the Library and Information Services: e-Learning Unit, submitted the e-Learning Classrooms Projects to the WSIS Stocktaking Database, to ensure recognition of the City of Joburg Libraries for their contribution to SDGs.
