The City of Johannesburg will host the second annual Climate Action Plan (CAP) Africa Regional Academy training workshop over three days from 30 July to 1 August 2019 in Rosebank.
Representatives from the 11 C40 cities in Africa namely, Abidjan, Accra, Addis Ababa, Cape Town, Dakar, Dar es Salaam, Durban (eThekwini), Johannesburg, Lagos, Tshwane and Nairobi, will be in attendance.
The workshop aims to build on the successes of the first regional academy in Lagos in May 2018. The purpose of the regional academy is to facilitate capacity building, knowledge sharing and collaboration between C40 member cities in Africa.
The objectives of this high-level engagement include demonstrating how an ambitious CAP is achievable and realistic for the African continent; sharing lessons learnt and experiences from the CAP Pilot Cities; creating space for sharing successes, challenges, experiences so that the CAP Africa Cities feels inspired and part of the community as they deliberate on initiatives that help reduce greenhouse emissions.
Among other topics, the delegates at the academy will deliberate on how to overcome CAP challenges, present solutions that will frame CAP processes and demonstrate an achievable end point, build a basic understanding including the realities of climate finance, stakeholder engagement and provide some insights, tools and processes for effective climate change communication.
There will be structured sessions during which industry experts will share ideas, plans and challenges they face in their respective countries.
As part of the activities, the City has arranged a site visit to the Robinson Deep Landfill site to view a landfill gas to energy plant. The purpose of the visit is to provide capacity building on the potential of using waste to generate energy while reducing the risk of the City running out of landfill space.
