For most working parents, the June school holidays are frustrating as they find themselves having to ensure that their bored offsprings are entertained.
To counter that, Region C Sport and Recreation went flat out to deliver a jam-packed holiday programme.
On 18-21 June, it touched down at Zandspruit (Emothonjeni) and kept 1 707 participants entertained. Then on 25-28 June, they moved to Leratong Village Park where 761 children flocked to park.
On 02-05 July it was the turn of Tshepisong West (Ebumnandini) and attendance was 1 084. This was a hectic and exciting service delivery programme that created a safety paradise for at least 3 552 learners.
The learners danced, sang and played netball and soccer. It was a blast. The hunger for activities was visible. Seeing children catching and kicking balls in the dusty grounds was a reminder that transformation is yet to be realised and the forgotten community of Johannesburg deserves services. Young Thandiso Jasson from Leratong Village said: “Ijoo, this is great. I wish this could go on and on.”
Assistant Director Sport and Recreation Joyce Jiyani said: “The region decided to take activities to the disadvantaged communities. This was in response to “Diphetogo” that is doing things differently.”
During the planning phase, the response rate showed that there would be greater opportunities to successfully deliver the holiday programme. However, during the delivery phase, the programme over exceeded expectations.
Overall, the Region C Sport and Recreation June school holiday programme rollout was tight, well planned, exciting and delivered excellently by a well-oiled machine.
“Mobilisation of resources from the Provincial Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, Johannesburg Metro Police and LoveLife assisted to present a fun-filled educational programme. A wish is to get as many stakeholders on board to deliver a more diverse mass based programme,” concluded Jiyani.
