Over R80 million has already been spend on repairs on the M2 Selby and Karsene bridge by the Joburg Roads Agency in order to ensure that the busy route is opened in three months.
Although the repairs are machine-intensive due to the complexity of the work, a total of 23 locals have landed short-term jobs and four local SMMEs have been engaged to provide various services.
“The safety of the motorists is always a priority to the JRA hence the major rehabilitation work on the M2 bridge. The organisation is committed to providing quality roads that are accessible, safe and liveable for our communities,” said JRA Acting Managing Director Siyabonga Nodu.
The City of Johannesburg closed the M2 Karsene East bound carriageway in August last year.
This was after a series of site inspections clearly indicated that the bridge deterioration has accelerated due to continuous vehicular use.
The demolition of the failed bridge structural elements at Selby Bridge have been completed and the reconstruction of new elements has commenced. The demolition of the collapse bridge deck and joints at Karsene has also been completed and reconstruction is currently underway.
“Our bridge infrastructure is in poor condition due to poor maintenance. The current maintenance backlog and poor condition of the City's bridges requires over R6 billion in expenditure,” said Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba.
