Get transported through a bird’s eye into the world of Geo-Information Systems and improve your awareness of Joburg’s spatial design.

The digital maps course offered by the Corporate Geo-Informatics (CGIS) Directorate affords City employees a platform to understand the spatial configuration of the municipality and how the valuation roll is assembled.

One of the course participants had this to say: “It was enlightening. Now I have an enhanced understanding of my city.”

These digital maps reveal stand numbers, agricultural holdings, street addresses and show the growth of home ownership in Johannesburg and how spatially and socially uneven the City is. Digital map users are able to zoom into any property in Johannesburg using aerial imagery and generate reports that display property details, including ownership, market value, use zone and ward number.

CGIS uses digital maps and technology to manage municipal assets and resources and to understand the City’s spatial design in order to provide electronic solutions.

Based on the 8th Floor of the Metro Centre in Braamfontein, CGIS has continuously developed and enhanced the City’s digital maps to provide property-related and other location-based data to City employees and residents.

A new website has been developed to replace the existing IMS one found on e-services and JoziNet. All this can be explored in a two-hour free website training session, offered only to City employees. The training will teach you how to navigate digital maps, conduct property searches, and identify information relevant to your department and line of work.

Booking is essential. Email Lesley Adams on lesleya@joburg.org.za or Roxanne Parthab on ims@joburg.org.za using the subject line “Website Training”; alternatively telephone Online Mapping Support on 011 407 6159. Group bookings are strongly encouraged as each training session accommodates up to nine people at a time, however, individuals will not be prohibited from attending.
