Joburg Sport and Recreation has heard the cry and felt the need to stand up and lead the healthy lifestyle programme for residents.
The first venue of the recent programme blitz was the Roodepoort Athletics Stadium in Region C. Once inside the stadium, the track invites you to fasten your running shoes and join the fitness fanatics.
No wonder the tempo was high which resulted in participants having to choose either aerobics, boot camp or drum majorettes.
The drummies went straight to their corner, lined up and started to respond to music while throwing their mace in the air sequentially. They brought a different rhythm and excitement to the healthy lifestyle programme, basically turning the table around and the crowd responded positively.
Amongst attendees were the grannies who use Cosmo City Multipurpose Centre three times a week for boxing.
When coach Claude Maphosa was asked where are the young boxing girls, he said: “We have young girls but they are not as devoted as the gogos.” Possible because the gogos have enough recreation times. An 80-year-old gogo, Constance Ngubane, could not agree more.
All instructors were meticulous in creating rhythm to follow and most often participants simply went with the flow. After all it was about endurance and following the rhythm to drive the sweat out.
“We do more that hall hire and facility maintenance. We pride ourselves in forming partnership with relevant stakeholders to advance sport and recreation programmes. Healthy lifestyle programme is part of what we coordinate. It is meant to get as many Joburgers as possible to improve the quality of their lives and mingle with others- social cohesion,” concluded Mandla Mdlalose, Deputy Director Sport and Recreation, City of Johannesburg.
