‘Adorable’ is an irony and ‘cute’ would be an understatement if the introduction of four new tiger cubs, a puma cub and a baby giraffe is anything to go by.

Joburg Zoo celebrates its 115th birthday in March 2019 and what better way to do that than welcome new life, with the births of four feisty and playful tiger cubs, a majestic giraffe calf named Sabawu, and an energetic puma cub.

Although a little shy, Sabawu strolls around confidently with the assurance of a very protective mom called Lady and Dad Madolo. Sabawu is named after the longest serving employee of the animal collection section.

The playful and energetic tiger cubs are fast learners that keep their mom busy throughout the day. They all have different personalities: one is a scared cat, terrified of everything, and needs reassurance at all times; the second one is very naughty, always trying out new things and taking the lead and the last two are just followers.

The Puma cub is very close to his mother, Zara who never leaves his side. He can be seen curiously exploring the enclosure under his mother’s watchful eye.

Joburg Zoo Executive Manager, Lombard Shirindzi says the entity is proud to be in a position to bring wildlife closer to city dwellers.

“As the world’s population continues to increase and wildlife disappears, more and more people live in urban centres disconnected from the natural environment. For most of these people, zoos provide the only way to regularly see and connect with other living creatures that share our planet,” Shirindzi explains.

The Joburg Zoo is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm, seven days a week, with secure parking at the entrance on Upper Park Drive in Saxonwold.
