‘Pockets of Knowledge,’ a stage play that transports audiences through a rural landscape where two boys witness a life changing event, premiered at the Soweto Theatre on Sunday, 17 March and dazzled audiences.
Performed by Menzi Mkhwane and Anele Nene, the theatre production explores the power of knowledge and South Africa’s political landscape, including the lack of political will, poor leadership and lack of accountability in a country plagued by countless socio-economic issues. It’s produced by Nkosingiphile Dlamini.
Zina Ngoni was at the premiere. “I like how the play addresses the biggest issues that South Africa is battling with now, like corruption. It is about time arts is used as a vehicles for social commentary,” said Ngoni.
Mkhwane, the star of the show, said Pockets of Knowledge is designed to encourage the youth to keep fighting for the right thing. “How is a man supposed to care for his father’s house when the petals of the flower are blown away by the wind? An uneducated youth is like a tree without its roots – the battle of a student is fought and won with a pen and paper,” he said.
