JDA shows off its projects

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Development Planning, Cllr Reuben Masango as well as officials from the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Development Planning recently visited six projects implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA).

MMC Masango was accompanied by the City of Johannesburg’s Group COO, Floyd Brink, to gain insight on ongoing projects aimed at developing and transforming the City.

The work of the JDA is vital to the success of the City of Johannesburg’s Growth and Development Strategy, Joburg GDS 2040, in creating a city that is resilient, liveable and sustainable, with the agency having already implemented over 600 projects across all regions of the City in the 18 years of its operation.

The JDA, which is accountable to the Department of Development Planning and to the MMC for Development Planning, took MMC Masango to the following projects:

Jabulani Precinct: MMC Masango visited the recently-completed Phase 6B of the Jabulani node. Phase 6B entailed the development of a community and recreational environment for people of all ages consisting of a community facility and a safe hub, a space where youth development intervention using football as its base occurs. Additional features currently under construction are two swimming pools, one for children and an Olympic-sized pool.

Dube NMT upgrade: Construction of Non-Motorised Transport infrastructure is currently underway on Leselinyana Street and Mncube Drive in Dube, Soweto. Once completed, the upgrades will promote pedestrian mobility and connectivity to Dube Railway Station.

Nancefield Multipurpose Centre: The new Multi-Purpose Sports Centre features an indoor basketball-oriented sports centre, two new outdoor basketball and netball pitches, a new splash pad and play equipment.

Florida Clinic: In Florida, Roodepoort, the JDA is implementing the construction of the upgraded Florida Clinic health care facility. Two adjacent houses, which were located on Madeleine Street, were earmarked for the development and were demolished to make way for the modern healthcare facility which will consist of 18 consulting rooms.

Claremont Clinic: The upgrade of the Claremont Clinic was successfully completed in June 2019. The scope of works, during the upgrade, included the construction of a new single storey clinic, a guard house, boundary walls and parking area, including all associated electrical and mechanical works.

Gandhi Square East: As part of the Gandhi Square East urban development framework, the JDA is implementing the public environment upgrade of Main Street. The project entails the construction of new sidewalks and road lay-by facilities, upgrade of storm water system, replacement of street lights and provision of new street furniture and trees.

MMC Masango expressed his gratitude to the JDA and all those involved for their commitment and dedication to seeing the projects through. “It is imperative we undertake such projects for the upliftment and for the benefit of the communities.”
