Residents of the City of Johannesburg are urged to avoid parts of the CBD as a result of demolition works on Sunday 24 November 2019.

The Bank of Lisbon, a 31-storey building on 37 Pixley ka Isaka Seme Street in Johannesburg central, will be imploded at 9am on Sunday.

The decision comes after a structural assessment on the building was conducted following the fatal fire in September 2018 that resulted in the death of three firefighters from the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services.

Structural engineers conducted an assessment and concluded that the fire caused severe damage to the slabs of the burnt floors and posed a threat of collapsing.
The following streets will be closed to traffic from Saturday 12h00 midnight until Monday morning:

 - Diagonal & Helen Joseph;
 - Albertina Sisulu & Ntemi Piliso;
 - Commissioner & Pixley ka Isaka Seme; and
 - Commissioner & Fraser

Business owners and residents who live in the surrounds will be evacuated to a waiting area at First National Bank for the duration of the blast. Members of the public will be able to view the controlled implosion.
