The Member of the Mayoral Committee on Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, has congratulated Rebonwe Primary School’s girls’ soccer team for representing South Africa in the World Nations Cup in Barcelona, Spain.

Rebonwe, which is based in Ivory Park, Region A, beat England’s’ team 3-1 on penalties.

“A hearty congratulations to the Rebonwe Primary School girls’ soccer team, and their coach Emanuel Gogela, for a job well done, and for flying South Africa’s flag high,” said MMC Sifumba.

The girls’ soccer team has been using the City’s Ivory Regional Park to practice – which is situated adjacent to the school. The team has also been participating in the Regions’ six-a-side soccer activations.

Rebonwe is the first girls team from South Africa to have competed in the world finals. The Danone Nations Cup girl’s world final comprised eight countries. England and South Africa were the only countries to send school teams.

The Danone Nations Cup, which took place on October 10 to 12, is the world’s largest international soccer tournament for 10- to 12-year-olds. It's the World Cup for kids and a great platform for over 2.5 million children from around the world who participate each year.

In South Africa specifically, the cup reaches around 3 000 schools, touching over 45 000 South Africans in advocating for children’s health and wellbeing.

“This is an amazing platform for our rising stars and we as the City are proud to have facilities near schools without grounds, which can be used not only for recreation, but for sporting development. We would like to urge communities to take care of these facilities by keeping them clean, and not vandalise or dump building rubble and litter in them. Let’s take ownership of our facilities,” said MMC Sifumba.
