Employees of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) recently planted 2 000 trees in 2 hours in Riverside View, Fourways in celebration of Arbour month.

Planting 2 000 trees in a limited time is hard physical labour and required many hands, but JCPZ employees rocked up to the site and pulled it off in a great team effort.

“When the siren sounded, 2 000 trees were standing tall; planted and ready to bring joy to the community in an area that was previously dusty and dull,” said JCPZ Managing Director, Bryne Maduka.
It was extremely hot on the day and this served as motivation for the tree planters, knowing that the young plants they were planting will, in a few years, provide much-needed shade for the Riverside View community.

“The trees are still young, but in a few years, they will be tall, spreading their branches covered with green leaves, providing shade for hot days and absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen to provide a cleaner, healthier environment. This is your legacy,” Maduka said.

The trees will also change the landscape of Riverside View and will welcome residents and visitors with green tree-lined avenues.

In addition, City Parks and Zoo kicked off September with a prestigious Arbour City Award from the National Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, which comes with a cool R300K in prize money.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you to every employee who participated in the mammoth tree planting effort and for bringing home the Arbour City Award,” said Maduka.
