The lockdown has prompted Poppy Louw and hubby Kabelo Molepo to engineer a home-based biscuit-selling venture, and what began in adversity has sprouted into prosperity with hundreds of patrons now lining up to sample her scrumptious cookies.

It was unforeseen financial mishaps and her vital energies that impelled Poppy and Kabelo to get Daddy Bae’s Kitchen off the ground.

And, unlike similar entrepreneurial exploits that arose and became profitable in a suitable economic climate, their gamble has become viable even during the global economic slump, with freshly baked cookies flying out of their oven daily.

The spokesperson for the Portfolio Head of Development Planning, Cllr Lawrence Khoza, says she elected Kabelo to handle the financial aspect with all its perils and has been standing by him with an unwavering constancy until he secures its triumph.

Propelled alike by their passion for business, ambition to grow and economic circumstances, the pair, at the prime of their relationship, are steadfast in pursuing entrepreneurial success.

“The best part about Daddy Bae’s Kitchen is how much fun everyone is having with the brand; it has captured people’s hearts and stomachs. I am in awe of how a business started during the lockdown led to this,” says Poppy.

Although Daddy Bae’s Kitchen, like most relationships, was sparked off by romance, it has been forged in the furnace of their oven, which produces over 500 delectable choc-chip and oats-flavoured cookies a week, certifying it as a thriving homerun bakery.

“We started with just 48 cookies on Sunday, 3 May, but it seems the lockdown has worked in our favour, thanks to Mohamed Ali, who owns the convenience store downstairs. He allows us to sell our cookies without any mark-up so we keep all the profits,” she explains.

And while Poppy continues to run across the City, managing Khoza’s stakeholder relations, her home-based business has developed a footprint in the capital city, her hometown of Kimberley and Johannesburg, using social media as a marketing tool. The bakery has even lined up two commercial chefs as prospective clients, with a lucrative partnership soon to be inked.
