The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Geoffrey Makhubo, was treated to a Porsche fast and furious spin around the stunning Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit to launch the iconic Kyalami 9-Hour Race that starts from 10-12 December.
The Kyalami 9-Hour Race returns this year after months of uncertainty caused by the advent of Covid-19.
Hosting of the iconic Kyalami 9 Hour Race in the City is a timely boost for the South African economy following a nationwide lockdown due to Coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking at the launch, Mayor Makhubo expressed his delight that the City of Johannesburg has been afforded the opportunity to host a major international motorsport event to affirm Joburg as a world-renowned host and South Africa as a tourist destination.
“All over the world, cities are competing for the attention of a finite number of investors, it’s very exciting for us as the City of Johannesburg to be able to showcase our amazing City and be able to let the world know we are open for business.
“The Kyalami 9-Hour race will showcase the City’s world-class infrastructure and capability to host international sporting events to millions of TV viewers worldwide,” said Mayor Makhubo.
He said while the City recognises that Covid-19 remains a threat to lives and livelihoods, lockdown regulations and protocols as well as stringent conditions will be observed and no spectators will not be allowed as the City of Johannesburg continues to proactively manage the spread of the virus.
Mayor Makhubo said he hopes the hosting of major international sporting events will encourage tourists to visit Johannesburg and enjoy what the City has to offer. “This presents us with another opportunity to showcase our great City as a place to visit, work and play,” concluded Mayor Makhubo.
After the adrenaline-pumping ride at 260 km/h speed cutting the sharp curves on the track, he admitted it’s not for the fainthearted.
The action will be broadcast live on SuperSport and will reach viewers worldwide and fans will get regular updates and interactive content on the Kyalami 9-Hour on the City’s social media platforms and its partners.
