The Executive Mayor, Geoff Makhubo has gone into self-quarantine as a precautionary measure after a staffer in his Private Office tested positive for Covid-19.

The staff member tested positive reportedly after a trip to the Western Cape for a funeral a week ago. That employee is currently in recovery and self-isolating at home.

“I wish them well during their treatment and recovery,” says Makhubo.

The Mayor recently tested for Covid-19 and the results came back negative.

“However, as a precaution, I took another Covid-19 test and decided to self-isolate until the results are known. The entire staff complement in my office has also undergone tests to determine their Covid-19 status,” he says.

Makhubo has warned all municipal employees and residents to be vigilant to avoid contracting the novel coronavirus.

He says his office will operate remotely from the Metro Centre, the municipal headquarters in Braamfontein, central Johannesburg until all staff members are cleared.

“This is not the time to take the foot off the accelerator. Service delivery must continue in the City and my Office will operate from isolated sites as prescribed by the protocols in place to prevent the spread of Covid-19,” he explains.

Makhubo says he’ll continue to monitor and provide guidance on how to contain and manage the spread of Covid-19 in the City while in self-isolation.

“#HlapaMatsoho. We won’t be defeated. We will overcome the coronavirus pandemic,” he says.
