The results of Geoff Makhubo’s Covid-19 test have come back negative, giving the Executive Mayor a huge boost in the fight against the spread of the pandemic in Johannesburg.

“I’m pleased to share with you that I have tested negative. I took the test as a precautionary measure on Monday after a staff member in my Private Office had tested positive for the coronavirus,” Makhubo explains.

He says the negative results do not mean residents should drop the guard against the global pandemic.

“We can’t relax in our fight against the coronavirus. The war is far from over and we dare not let our guards down,” he adds.

Makhubo will attend a scheduled digital Council meeting on Thursday, 11 June and will also hold a Mayoral Committee meeting remotely on Friday, 12 June to reduce direct contact with fellow councillors.

The entire staff complement in the Mayor’s office had also undergone testing to determine their Covid-19 status and “thankfully no other case has come out positive”.

The staff member who tested positive is recovering at home.

“Allow me to express my gratitude to City officials, the residents and stakeholders for the well wishes directed to me and my staff following the pronouncement of a positive case in my office,” says Makhubo.

The Mayor notes that the war on Covid-19 can only be won if all residents embrace people who have tested positive and ensure that their mental and physical states are ready to battle against the virus.

He’s urged City officials, residents and stakeholders to continue to adhere to lockdown regulations, maintain social distancing and wear masks at all times when in public spaces.

“#HlapaMatsoho. Together we can fight the spread of Covid-19 and succeed,” he says.
