The Gauteng Provincial Government and the City of Johannesburg will launch the Gender-Based Violence Response Plan on Sunday 8 March 2020 at Johannesburg City Hall.
Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko will launch the plan following President Cyril Ramaphosa's Emergency Response Action Plan on GBV and femicide.
The City Johannesburg's Department of Social Development is also currently hosting public consultations on gender-based violence (GBV). The City is committed to playing a role in addressing GVB in disadvantaged communities and is engaging with the community at a grassroots level to understand what the causes of GBV are and to consult with community on the solutions and strategies that will address the scourge of GBV. So far the public consultation have taken place in Region A, D and C.
The most recent public consultation took place at Cosmo City Multipurpose Centre on 5 March 2020. What was clear from the consultation is that the community has an appetite to get involved in stopping GBV.
One of the community members in attendance, Godfrey Molokome, said one of the reasons GBV is increasing is because government departments don't work hand in hand with communities. He further said that an “integrated approach between civil society and government to GBV will reduce is significantly".
One of the other key points that came out Cosmo City public consultation is that the community would like the City to create more awareness on GBV through door to door communication.
Thabo Mashego the Director of the Women and Elderly Unit in the Department of Social Development, encouraged community members to get more involved in influencing government policy on issues that affect them.
He urged the community to attend the Gender-Based Violence Response Plan launch on Sunday 8 March 2020 at Johannesburg City Hall.
