Council Speaker, Councillor Nonceba Molwele has decommissioned the old Council flag at the Saluting Dais on the Metro Centre Piazza on Friday, 28 February.
Cllr Molwele says the decommissioned flag had a wrong colour sequence and did not follow the national colour order.
“The new flag clearly alludes to the colours of the new national flag of South Africa and the central panel alludes to the City’s code of arms,” she says.

The design of the new flag comprises a simplicated vertical three colour sequence, including white, blue and red.
The Council flag has the full code of arms in the centre and is only displayed when the Executive Mayor, the Speaker of Council, Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) or the Chief Whip is officiating.
This means regional offices can only display the national flag.
The decommissioning ceremony kicked-off with a parade by the South African Defence Force and members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department.
Cllr Molwele had asked all City offices not to hoist their flags today in respect of the ceremony.
The last time the Council flag was renewed was in 1979 by the then mayor.
