The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has sealed off the left lane of Christiaan de Wet road on the westrand for rehabilitation work and to install a new stormwater drainage system.

The arterial thoroughfare behind the Clearwater Shopping Mall, which leads to Ontdekkers Road in Roodepoort will remain inaccessible until repair work has been completed.

Several roads around the City suffered significant damage, while some were eroded due to torrential rains that battered parts of Joburg during the summer season and require urgent repairs.

JRA’s Head of Infrastructure Development, Siyabonga Genu says the dipped left lane requires urgent rehabilitation work to the tune of R25-million rands.

“This will only be finalized once design solutions have been developed. In the meantime, we have implemented a temporary closure on the left lane (east or west direction) to ensure the safety of all road users. All other lanes on that road remain unaffected and are open to traffic,” Genu explains.

The entity has urged motorists to adhere to the speed limit when approaching the closed-off section, which is just before the Wilgerood Road T-junction.

The JRA is a municipal entity responsible for the design, maintenance, and the repair of Joburg’s road network and stormwater infrastructure, including bridges and culverts, traffic lights and signage. Last year, the entity reopened the M2 highway between the Crown Interchange and Maraisburg off-ramp following a R189-million rehabilitation project. Of that amount, R155-million went to rebuilding the M2 Bridge and R34-million was dedicated to resurfacing the road.
