The Executive Mayor, Cllr Geoff Makhubo says the Government of Local Unity he leads is using the handing-over of title deeds to restore land tenure rights to beneficiaries of state-subsidised housing.
Cllr Makhubo confirms that the City is on an ongoing drive to issue title deeds to hordes of residents in all seven (7) regions of Johannesburg.
The Mayor says presenting homeowners with long-awaited title deeds to their properties will go a long way towards tackling poverty, vulnerability, inequality and social exclusion.
It will enable those who own land to transact more efficiently, either to sell the property or to raise a loan using it as collateral.
“You are now in a position to make decisions about that property you own,” he told Mr Malefatsane Lehloka, who was one of the dozens of recipients of title deeds at a packed Zakariyya Park Civic Hall, south of the metro.
Cllr Makhubo says the handing over of title deeds is not just about transferring properties from the state to beneficiaries. It was also about enabling people to make decisions about their own homes, lives and those of their children and families.
“We know of cases where thieves claim to have bought the deceased’s home and the family is left stranded. Thus, we took it upon ourselves as the Government of Local Unity to hand out these title deeds to the housing beneficiaries to avoid such from happening,” he says.
Cllr Makhubo notes that issuing title deeds is about offering a level of freedom and opportunity that state housing beneficiaries had not previously enjoyed.
Flanked by the MMC for Housing, Mlungisi Mabaso, Makhubo handed over 600 title deeds to residents of Vlakfontein Ward 122.
