The City of Joburg Region B has embarked on a week-long Kleena Joburg reloaded campaign, which focuses on clearing illegal dumping, collecting waste, cleaning streets, sidewalks, fixing water leakages, repairing road surfaces, unblocking drainage systems, enforcing adherence to the by-laws, cutting grass, planting trees and fixing streetlights.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Mpho Moerane, who was accompanied by the Regional Manager for Region B, Mohau Ntheli and other senior managers of the City, kicked off the launch in Riverlea on Monday, 26 October 2020.
Cllr Moerane said the clean-up is about City departments coming together to focus on service delivery issues on the ground and educating community on the importance of healthy environments. He encouraged residents to take responsibility and clean their surroundings.
“The campaign is about building responsible communities and educating citizens not to litter,” said MMC Moerane.
Pikitup is also distributing 240-ltr bins to ensure that litter is disposed correctly. A number of City departments were out in full force educating communities including health workers offering screening and testing for Covid-19, testing for diabetes, hypertension and HIV-Aids. Social development focused on substance abuse and drug prevention and intervention methods. Other departments and entities represented were Disaster Management, Libraries and Information Services, Food Resilience, Pikitup, City Power, Joburg Water, Joburg City Parks and Zoo and external stakeholders such as Sophiatown SAPS.
Region B Director Ntheli said: “I’m pleased that all the departments are here to ensure that service delivery is accelerated. Ward 68 is one of the areas that has been identified with major service delivery failures and this programme assists in ensuring that everyone does their part and our objectives are met.”
Areas that will be cleaned during this campaign include Riverlea Ext, Kathrada Park, Maraisburg Cemetery, Westbury Park and Brixton. The campaign will continue until Friday, 30 October 2020.
