The Lenasia Public Transport facility is now open. The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) is the infrastructure development arm of the City of Johannesburg and implemented the upgrading of the Lenasia Public Transport facility. The project forms part of the JDA’s turnkey projects identified for upgrades. The Lenasia Public Transport facility upgrades were to accommodate taxis, traders, pedestrians, and commuters in a safe, clean, and attractive environment that will enhance the overall functionality of the Lenasia CBD.

The project entailed widening Lenasia Drive and Rose Avenue as well as the reconstruction of Station Close and the taxi loading and holding area, consisting of about 8000m2 interlocking block paving.
The trees added to the street furniture.
The JDA’s objective is to create a strengthened partnership between the City, community, and business by enhancing public environments by upgrading sidewalks and introducing street art and urban furniture and fixtures.
The scope of work for the upgrade of the facility including:
• Extension and upgrade of steel canopy structure with column bases
• Public ablution facilities refurbishment
• Paving upgrade and provision of new non-motorised transport sidewalks
• Asphalt overlays
• Storm water drainage
• Sewer pipes and manholes
• Hawker stalls
• Improved lighting
• Landscaping
• Fencing for ablution facilities
• Street furniture such as tables, benches and bollards
A total of nine local SMMEs and 20 local labourers worked on the project, with expenditure exceeding R 2.3 million.
Though the facility is complete and ready for operation, some additional items have been agreed on through extensive stakeholder engagements to implement in the new year.
“The Lenasia Public Transport Facility will supplement the various transport infrastructure the JDA has been implementing in Region G.
This includes Orange Farm and Vlakfontein Public Transport Facilities,” MMC for Development Planning, Cllr Belinda Echeozonjoku said.
To date, the City of Johannesburg has spent R117.3 million the facilities in Orange Farm, Vlakfontein and Lenasia.
