Beginning on 22 April 2024, the City will extend a helping hand to cash-strapped households, allowing them to settle just 10% of their total municipal debt when arranging payments, providing much-needed relief from financial strain. This exclusive offer, available only until 31 May 2024, empowers residential customers to address their outstanding municipal debts by paying a mere 10% when entering into payment arrangements with the City. Kgamanyane Maphologela, the Director of Customer Communications at the City’s Group Finance Department, highlights the accessibility of this discount to all residential customers struggling with their monthly municipal bills. Previously, a 30% downpayment was required to qualify for payment arrangements, a requirement now waived.

“The City recognises the significant financial burdens facing many households. This initiative is one of our many efforts to support our customers and demonstrate our commitment to being a compassionate municipality. We are dedicated to assisting residents in managing their rates and utility accounts effectively,” explains Maphologela.
Illustrating the impact of this initiative, Maphologela provides an example: a resident owing the City R100 000 for municipal services would now only need to pay a R10 000 deposit and arrange payments without further queries.
Maphologela urges all eligible customers to seize this opportunity by visiting their nearest Customer Service Centre across the City, conveniently located in all seven regions.
Required documentation for discount applications includes an ID copy of the account holder and a power of attorney for cases where the account holder cannot apply personally.
All property owners encountering difficulties servicing their accounts are encouraged to approach the City promptly to avoid disconnection, by arranging payments and signing an acknowledgement of debt.
