As Joburg Market concludes the first quarter of Operation Phendula, a comprehensive initiative to modernise and enhance the market’s infrastructure and services, it recognises and celebrates the dedicated team behind this transformative effort.
Leading this project are three individuals whose vision and dedication have driven one of the most crucial projects the market has seen. Acting CEO Sello Makhubela, Acting Chief Operations Officer Charles Park, and Acting Executive: Operations Cedric Nephawe have been the cornerstone of Operation Phendula’s success. Their leadership and commitment have been instrumental in navigating the complexities of this monumental undertaking.
The most visible changes have been the upgrades between halls 4 and 5 North, where the restrooms have undergone a complete transformation. The renovation included tiling, painting, and roofing, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetics of these essential facilities.
The platforms and ramp at Hall 2, adjacent to the bubble shop, have also seen a makeover. Repairs and a fresh coat of paint have revitalised these spaces, making them more welcoming and accessible for everyone.
Potholes have also been fixed, contributing to safer and smoother transportation of fresh produce across various halls. The main gate has been refurbished with a new paint job, repaired pedestrian paving, and the installation of modern boom gates, bolstering security and traffic flow.
The cooking vendors’ containers have been given a new lease of life with a thorough cleaning and a fresh coat of paint, offering a complete makeover that invigorates the space with a sense of renewal.
Some roofs in the market area have been fitted with waterproof coverings, ensuring that business can continue unhindered, regardless of the weather.
Further improvements include the repair of an underground water pipe near the watermelon area, which is crucial for preventing water damage and maintaining the integrity of the infrastructure. Additionally, the installation of double burglar doors next to the sprinklers and circular lights on the platform has increased safety and visibility, creating a secure environment for all.
Under the strategic guidance of Makhubela, the project has not only met its objectives but has also set new standards of excellence. His ability to inspire and mobilise the team has been crucial in steering the project's first quarter towards completion.
Park, with his extensive experience and operational expertise, has ensured that every aspect of the project has been meticulously planned and executed. His leadership has been pivotal in coordinating the various elements of Operation Phendula, ensuring seamless integration and implementation.
Nephawe’s hands-on approach has guaranteed that the project's operational aspects have run smoothly. His efforts, alongside JM’s Maintenance Department, have been crucial in conducting thorough inspections and ensuring that all upgrades are carried out effectively. The team’s dedication has been evident in their willingness to brave cold weather conditions and other challenges to maintain the project’s momentum.
