​In a move to foster sustainability and elevate environmental consciousness among the youth, the City of Johannesburg's energy utility, City Power, has officially launched an Energy Efficiency Schools competition for 2025.


This initiative targets public non-fee-paying high schools across Johannesburg, galvanising pupils to engage actively in the dynamic world of energy efficiency and renewable resources.

“The cornerstone of sustainable energy practices lies in education and innovation. Our competition is designed not just to inform, but to inspire young minds to think creatively about the energy challenges we face today and in the future," says City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava.

The competition comprises three categories learners can explore, encouraging a broad approach to problem-solving and innovation.

Pupils can opt to design artistic posters that vividly depict themes of sustainability,

Short Video/Film

Or they may produce short videos, limited to 15 minutes, demonstrating energy efficiency practices

Creative Models/DevicesConstruct creative models or devices using low-cost, recycled materials, showcasing practical applications of renewable energy concepts.

 
The competition serves as a platform to enhance learning through practical engagement with theoretical knowledge. Schools are invited to submit one entry per category, with each submission developed collaboratively by teams consisting of one to three learners.

“We want every learner to feel empowered to contribute to energy conservation initiatives, giving them the opportunity to showcase their talents and ideas," says Mashava.

Participation is open exclusively to public non-fee-paying high schools in Johannesburg. Pupils whose parents work for City Power or other municipal departments are not eligible to participate. The competition submission deadline is 11 April 2025.

Schools stand to win prizes such as energy-efficient LED lighting installations, energy performance certificates, solar water heating systems, and solar photovoltaic installations. Individual winners will also receive valuable educational prizes, including:

  • ​Laptops or educational tools
  • Portable solar lanterns
  • City Power bursaries for Grade 12 learners pursuing studies in energy-related fields

“These rewards reflect our commitment to not only recognising excellence but also investing in the future leaders of our energy sector," says Mashava.

The Schools' Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management Competition promises to be an exhilarating journey for students. By encouraging them to think creatively and devise innovative solutions, City Power is not merely educating a generation—it is equipping them with essential skills to build a sustainable future.
