In a landmark moment for the residents of Soweto, the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, officially opened the newly built Naledi Clinic.

This event marks a significant step forward in the city's ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and services for its residents.

Also at the opening ceremony was the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development, Cllr Ennie Makhafola, alongside senior city officials and an enthusiastic crowd of local community members.

The R90 million Naledi Clinic is one of the city's 75 primary health facilities and is strategically located in the heart of Naledi, ensuring easy access to public transport and walkability for patients. This modern facility reflects the City of Johannesburg's substantial investment in making comprehensive healthcare services accessible to all.

Although unable to attend in person, the MMC for Development Planning, Cllr Eunice Mgcina, shared her excitement about the clinic's completion: “This project is a testament to the City's unwavering commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and services for our community. The involvement of small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and local labour throughout the project underscores our dedication to economic empowerment."

The Johannesburg Development Agency expertly managed the clinic's construction. Its skilled project management and oversight ensured the successful delivery of this critical healthcare facility. Beyond improving healthcare access, the project also empowered the community by creating job opportunities and engaging local businesses as part of the agency's economic empowerment programme.

“The contributions of the SMMEs involved have been invaluable," said MMC Mgcina. “Your hard work has not only supported the clinic's construction but has also driven local economic growth and job creation."

The Naledi Clinic is the latest accomplishment under the JDA's Accelerated Infrastructure Delivery Programme, which focuses on delivering essential health, recreational, and transport-related projects while collaborating with local communities to co-produce solutions.

MMC Makhafola expressed her gratitude to all stakeholders, including community members, whose input was vital in ensuring the clinic meets local needs. “Your engagement has played a crucial role in shaping a facility that truly serves the community," she said.

Reflecting on the historical significance of the project, Mayor Morero remarked: “Today, we fulfil the commitment outlined in the Joburg 2040 Growth and Development Strategy. We are thrilled that the voices of the Naledi community have been heard and acted upon."

“This new health facility represents a major upgrade from the original Naledi Clinic, which struggled to meet the growing healthcare demands of the community. Now, we have a modern, well-equipped clinic designed to promote healthy lifestyles and enhance community wellness."

Features of the new Naledi Clinic:

Twenty consultation and counselling rooms: The clinic features a modern layout across four wings, including:

  • Acute wing: For treatment of acute illnesses and daily healthcare.
  • Chronic wing: Dedicated to chronic illness treatment and counselling.
  • Mother and child wing: Focused on pre-natal and post-natal care.
  • Emergency services wing: Equipped to handle minor emergencies and stabilise patients for transfer to larger healthcare facilities.

Capacity: The waiting area can comfortably accommodate 200 patients, and the facility is equipped with administrative capabilities to effectively serve the community.

As the Naledi Clinic officially opens its doors, it stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the City of Johannesburg's dedication to improving the health and well-being of its residents. The clinic is a celebration of progress, collaboration, and the City of Johannesburg's dedication to building a healthier, more empowered community.
