The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), in partnership with Pikitup, the City's waste management service provider, is rolling out multi-million rand infrastructure development projects aimed at improving refuse removal and waste management services across Johannesburg.
Pikitup currently operates 12 waste depots, 44 garden refuse sites, and four active landfill sites.
The JDA's infrastructure upgrades are designed to support Pikitup's mission of delivering integrated waste solutions while contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable city.
These projects fall under the JDA's Public Infrastructure Delivery Programme, which focuses on maximising investment in essential municipal infrastructure. The programme ensures that waste management infrastructure is developed and delivered efficiently, in line with Johannesburg's growth and environmental goals.
Ongoing Waste Infrastructure Projects
Linbro Park
A new waste sorting facility is being built at Linbro landfill, including dedicated reclaimers' areas, stormwater systems, and access roads. Brickwork and electrical installations are underway.
Marie Louise Landfill
To enhance security, a reinforced concrete boundary wall is being constructed. Site establishment is complete.
Ennerdale Landfill
Similar upgrades are taking place at Ennerdale, where a boundary wall is being built to improve safety and operational efficiency. Site establishment is complete.
Zondi Depot
A new concrete boundary wall is being erected to secure the depot and protect Pikitup's offices and equipment. Site establishment is complete.
Goudkoppies Landfill – Phase 2
This landfill rehabilitation project includes a temporary leachate pond, a pumping system, and restoration of a contaminated pond. Work has reached 5% completion.
Midrand Depot (Rabie Ridge)
The JDA is constructing boundary walls, stormwater drainage, water and sewer infrastructure, earthworks, and a guardhouse. Site establishment will begin shortly. These projects demonstrate the City's commitment to delivering world-class waste management infrastructure that strengthens refuse removal services, boosts environmental sustainability, and supports resilient urban development.
