In the world of ICT – historically dominated by men – women are bringing fresh perspectives, empathy, and resilience to the table. At Joburg Market, this spirit is embodied by Chief Information Officer Sivuyisiwe Gwebani, whose career is a testament to determination and vision.

With a background spanning banking, insurance, and government, Gwebani joined Joburg Market at a critical time. “The opportunity arrived as the organisation was preparing to embark on its Smart Market journey," she recalls. “I saw it as a chance to bring my expertise and passion for technology-driven change into a sector vital to food security and economic growth."

Her fascination with technology began early. “From the start, I was intrigued by how innovation could solve real-world problems," she says. That curiosity now drives her mission to create “a smarter, more connected, and more efficient Market, where data-driven decision-making becomes part of our culture."

While challenges for women in ICT persist, Gwebani's journey is one of resilience and empowerment. “I've faced moments of being underestimated, but I chose resilience, continuous learning, and mentorship to overcome them," she explains.

Her message this Women's Month is powerful: “You belong here. Lead with confidence, break barriers, and remember this – women are not just part of the future, women are the future."
