Johannesburg is set to welcome some of the world's brightest minds in physics following its successful bid to host the 2027 International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) General Assembly and the Working Group 21 International Conference on Physics.
The announcement marks a significant milestone for the city's growing knowledge economy and its expanding role as a hub for global scientific collaboration.
The winning bid was led by the Joburg Convention Bureau, in partnership with the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP) and Wits University's Faculty of Science. Themed “Physics for Regenerative Development", the conference will bring together over 375 delegates from across the world for seven days of high-level dialogue, research exchange, and strategic collaboration.
The event is expected to inject R16.8 million into Johannesburg's local economy while further positioning the city as a premier destination for global scientific discourse.
The bid was initiated through engagements at Meetings Africa 2025, where SAIP participated as hosted buyers. The upcoming summit will highlight the role of physics in advancing sustainable development, climate resilience, and technological innovation — with topics covering clean energy, artificial intelligence, health, and planetary wellbeing.
The Indaba Hotel, Spa and Conference Centre will host the event, offering world-class facilities and a tranquil environment ideal for intellectual exchange. The conference will also coincide with the formation of a Southern African Regional Physical Society, aimed at amplifying Africa's voice in the global scientific community.
Nandipha Zonela, the Chairperson of the Johannesburg Tourism Company, welcomed the announcement, saying: “Johannesburg is honoured to host this prestigious gathering of global physicists. The selection of our city reflects the strength of our knowledge economy, our commitment to sustainability, and our proven ability to deliver world-class events. We look forward to showcasing Johannesburg's vibrant culture, scientific excellence, and warm hospitality to the international physics community."
The IUPAP General Assembly and International Conference on Physics is one of eight major business events successfully secured for Johannesburg between 2025 and 2030 through the Johannesburg Convention Bureau's strategic bid support programme.
